Introduction To HTML & CSS – Learn HTML & CSS Basics

#1 Introduction to HTML & CSS | Why HTML is important?

If you are learning to code or just curious to know about coding, this is where you start. HyperText Markup Language or short for HTML is the basic building block of the web. It gives meaning and structure to the web content. HTML is paired with CSS (which we will be learning later) controls the appearance and styling of the content like colors, size, etc, and Javascript for functionality or behavior like inputs, animations, etc.

Different HTML pages are linked together to create a website. The “HyperText” in HTML refers to links that connect web pages, whereas “Markup” refers to annotate text, images and other content which are displayed on the web browser. The HTML markup includes “elements” (which we will learn in detail) or tags such as <head>, <title>, <body> and many others. HTML elements tell the browser how to display the content. The element names are surrounded by ‘<‘ and ‘>’ and are case insensitive. Elements require a closing tag like this ‘</’.

The following is an basic HTML template used to start a project and showcases the use of different elements and tags:

<!DOCTYPE html>

  <html>

    <head>

      <title>Page Title</title>

    </head>

    <body>

      <h1>This is a Heading</h1>
      <p>This is a paragraph.</p>

    </body>

  </html>

In the next section, we will learn about HTML basics and concepts.
